Childbirth Survival International leadership recognizes public health disparities exist in all communities whether global or local including Baltimore, Maryland. As an international nonprofit anchored in Baltimore with a Baltimore-based team, the vision is to collaborate with local and community partners to contribute to the Healthy Baltimore Families and Communities agenda. Teenage pregnancies, under-five mortality, intergenerational poverty, access to health services, low childhood literacy, youth violence, to mention a few, exist in underserved communities in Baltimore City with comparable statistics to some communities abroad where CSI is implementing low-cost effective interventions to change behaviors, save lives, inspire individuals, and transform communities.
Through grassroots community outreach and strategic collaboration with local partners, CSI Baltimore's agenda contributes to ongoing efforts to improve health, drive prosperity, and ensure systemic inequities do not become permanent barriers for families, children and youth to live to their full potential and thrive.
CSI Baltimore Programs
Family--healthy and thriving—is the best gift anyone can ask for. CSI Baltimore's Healthy & Thriving Families vision ensures families struggling to achieve optimum status of health and well-being are fully supported. Social, economical, and cultural barriers affect families with pregnant women, newborn moms, young children from attaining the best possible health status. Historically, CSI is proud of its ability to reach the unreached with health services, resources, and information by applying culturally-sensitive tones across its program implementation strategies. By promoting breastfeeding, prenatal access, and postpartum health, our local team is optimistic more black and brown children and families in Baltimore will be healthy and thrive. Baltimore Babies Breastfeeding Program (B³P), is designed to contribute to ongoing Baltimore City and County efforts to improve infant and child health in Baltimore, Maryland. B³P will empower English and non-English speaking mothers and families, including spouses, partners, and grandmother to support newborn mothers to initiate early breastfeeding and sustain chosen infant feeding method for six months and up to when the baby is two years old. CSI's B³P is open to all mothers and our team will apply strategic and culturally acceptable approaches when working with different racial and ethnic groups. While it is best to breastfeed, it is important to have Baltimore families invested in the program. Girl Talk, Girl Power program, is designed to provide a combination of educational and social support services to adolescent girls, 12-16 years old in underserved communities across Baltimore. The global program was launched in Sandtown-Winchester Community in West Baltimore on Monday, June 25, 2018 by having a free summer camp program for eight weeks. The summer camp program created a safe and structured environment for girls, had engaging and interactive activities, guest speakers to inspire the girls, local field trips to expose them and increase their knowledge, and lessons in team building, time management, financial literacy, career visioning, to mention a few. The program introduced global health focusing on lives of adolescent girls especially in developing countries, leadership, and other concepts to broaden their worldly views/perceptions. With additional financial support, CSI Baltimore plans to add a cultural immersion experience for high achieving adolescent girls from economically disadvantaged communities to connect with adolescent girls in communities where CSI implements Girl Talk, Girl Power and potentially make it an annual experience for girls in Baltimore City to travel within the US and abroad. Thanks to 2018 summer program sponsors and contributors: Kaiser Permanente, The Zanvyl and Isabelle Krieger Fund, Baltimore City Housing Food Summer Service Program, KIND Snacks, Planned Parenthood of Maryland, Giant Food, and Shoppers. The goal of this program is to ensure no child is left behind, children develop the love for reading and writing, and are prepared for kindergarten and beyond in life. The program works closely with mothers to build, strengthen, and reinforce the mother-child bond to help their children prepare for school and continue best reading practices acquired from CSI Baltimore's literacy program when they transition out of the shelter. The program successfully launched on Saturday, October 7, 2017 and continues to occur and expand to additional communities in need of quality early childhood education support services.
