1. Who founded Childbirth Survival International (CSI) and when was it founded? CSI was founded in 2013 by two African women leaders with expertise in global health, midwifery, nursing, policy, and community development: Stella Mpanda and Tausi Suedi. CSI is a 501(c)(3) global grassroots nonprofit humanitarian organization, registered and incorporated in Baltimore, Maryland and in countries in sub-Saharan Africa. 2. What did the founders have in mind when they decided to establish CSI in April 2013? Access to quality basic healthcare services is a universal human right; it is a moral obligation to reach the unreached with health services, resources, and information. Healthy equity and social justice are more than movements, they are fundamental human rights.
3. What are CSI's priority areas? Maternal-Newborn-Child Health; Family Planning/Reproductive Health; Frontline Health Workers; Girls' Education; Women's Economic Empowerment; Adolescent Reproductive Care; and Community Education & Empowerment. Read more about CSI's Top Five Priorities here.
4. Where does CSI work? CSI primarily works in sub-Saharan Africa and has small scale community programs in the United States of America. Over the years CSI's programs have been funded through grants for example from Rotary International, Jewish Healthcare Foundation, PNC Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, CAMEL Oil Tanzania, Alpha Home Care Services, LLC, in-kind donations from partners/collaborators for example JMK Park and Health Facilities, generous individuals, and contributions from CSI founders and board members.
