Safina "Noah's Ark" for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)
What is the meaning of Safina? In Arabic, Safina means vessel and can also refer to Noah's Ark in Swahili. CSI's Safina monthly program to educate and empower orphans and vulnerable children can be understood as a vessel to make sure the marginalized young don't get left behind but have the opportunity to achieve their dreams, be successful and thrive like their peers. The program has three focus areas "the basics" in order to be an effective and strong vessel for orphans and vulnerable children: Feed, Care, and Educate including support for vocational training via CSI's YES program.
On April 29, 2016, the Safina program was launched in Uganda in honor and memory of a mother, grandmother, and life-long public servant Safina Nabwami who strongly supported CSI initiatives and cared deeply for women and children especially orphans and at-risk youth. She was a champion and avid advocate for women and children in her community, taking care of orphans and vulnerable children, educating them and supporting them to be the best they can be. The Safina program falls under CSI's Keeping Youth Healthy, Alive, Informed umbrella and takes place monthly. Through strategic collaborations and partnerships, CSI's Safina program will roll out across Uganda and Africa to support many orphans and vulnerable children, leaving no child behind. In January 2018, Safina program was rolled out in Bukoba, Tanzania.
